Goblet cells in the respiratory lining ramp up mucus secretion as a direct antiviral defense mechanism, the resulting congestion is not a malfunction, but the immune system actively working to trap and clear the pathogen (Eccles, 2005; Tobin, Thomas & Bomar, 2025). The cough reflex is triggered by irritant receptors in the airway responding to this mucus buildup and inflammation, serving as a mechanical clearance mechanism rather than a symptom to simply be suppressed.

Fever is also centrally mediated, elevation of core body temperature, driven by pyrogenic cytokines released during the immune response, intended to create a less favorable environment for viral replication (Tobin, Thomas & Bomar, 2025). Further, chronic or persistent cough is a condition when it stages beyond the initial infection and has its own distinct clinical entity requiring separate evaluation and management, involving cough hypersensitivity syndrome and airway receptor sensitization (Morice et al., 2020). This distinction determines that a cough that persists for weeks isn't necessarily a sign of unresolved infection and treating it with medication is actually unnecessarily bothering the immune system.

Most commonly, people opt for OTC medicines that contain acetaminophen, or any antihistamine or decongestant. Or sometimes, they opt for medicated antibiotics. Unknowingly, these medications are actually harming the immune system. All these medicines come with severe side-effects such as sedation, cognitive impairment, and drug dependency with prolonged or excessive use (Schifano et al., 2021). Moreover, as per ERS guidelines it suggests using such medicines can cause severe harm especially to the children that includes rare but serious cardiovascular and central nervous system effects in this age group (Korppi, 2021). Additionally, the overuse of antibiotics is posing a severe threat not only to the individual's immune system but also to the overall community. Recent studies reveal the heavy occurrence of antibiotic-resistant infections due to overuse or misuse of antibiotics. On the contrary, these common RTIs are usually caused by viruses, and the antibiotics are meant for inhibiting the growth of bacteria and not for the viruses.
